A day trip from Naples to Capri offers an unforgettable experience filled with scenic beauty, historical sites, and charming attractions. This guide covers the highlights of Capri for a memorable visit, whether you are exploring for a day or an extended stay.
Best Way to Get to Capri from Naples
Ferry Connections
The best way to reach Capri from Naples is by ferry. Several ferry companies operate routes from the port of Naples, including high-speed ferries and direct ferries.
The main ferry terminals in Naples are Molo Beverello (for the high-speed ferries) and Calata Porta di Massa (for the regular and slow ferries).
To avoid long lines and secure your ferry ticket, check ferry schedules and purchase tickets in advance, especially during the high season (early April to late October). However, it is possible to purchase your ferry ticket once you arrive at the pier.
Starting Point: Port of Naples
The ferry port is the starting point for your adventure. From here, you can take a high-speed ferry, which takes about 50 minutes, a regular ferry that takes about 60 mins, or a slow ferry that takes around 85 minutes. The earliest ferry usually departs in the early morning, providing ample time to explore Capri in a day.
Must-See Attractions in Capri
Arrival at Marina Grande
When you arrive at Marina Grande, the main port in Capri, you will immediately experience the beautiful views of the Bay of Naples. This bustling port is where ferry connections from Naples dock and is the starting point for exploring the island.
You will find the ticket office and several meeting points here for group or private tours, with options that guide you through Capri’s highlights or allow free time to explore on your own.
A short walk from the port leads to cafes, shops, and scenic spots, giving you an immediate taste of Capri’s charm.
Exploring Marina Piccola
After visiting Marina Grande, you can walk or take a local bus to Marina Piccola. This picturesque area on the southern coast of Capri offers stunning views of the Faraglioni Rocks and is known for its small beach and clear, inviting waters.
Marina Piccola is a great spot to relax, swim, and soak up the sun. This area is also great for sunbathing and swimming in the winter as it is sheltered from the wind and has a southern exposure, so it is always the warmest spot on the island.
Lunch in Capri
Capri is renowned for its fantastic cuisine, and visiting a seaside restaurant is a spectacular idea. Throughout the island, various restaurants serve fresh seafood, pasta, and other local dishes.
Enjoying a meal while overlooking the turquoise waters and stunning cliffs is a true highlight of any trip to the island.
While the restaurants with breathtaking views are certainly worth a visit, do not overlook other great options like Lo Sfizio, Da Paolino, and Hangout Capri for delicious and fresh meals.
Capri Town and La Piazzetta
To reach Capri Town from Marina Grande, hop on the funicular railway for a scenic and quick ride up the hill. At the top, you will find yourself in the heart of Capri Town, centered around the lively square known as La Piazzetta.
This famous piazzetta is surrounded by quaint cafes, boutiques, and historic buildings, where locals and visitors gather to relax and enjoy the atmosphere.
Gardens of Augustus
A short walk from La Piazzetta brings you to the Gardens of Augustus. These beautifully manicured gardens offer panoramic views of the Faraglioni Rocks and the Sea of Capri. It is a great spot for photos and a peaceful break from the crowds of tourists.
Visit Villa Jovis
Villa Jovis, located on the eastern side of Capri, is an ancient Roman villa built by Emperor Tiberius. To reach Villa Jovis, you can take a scenic uphill hike from Capri Town, which takes about 45 minutes. The path is well-marked and offers beautiful views of the island and the sea.
Once at Villa Jovis, you can explore the ruins and learn about the villa's history. The site also provides panoramic views of the Amalfi Coast and the Bay of Naples, making it a rewarding destination for history enthusiasts and nature lovers. You may also run into wild goats that roam free on Capri's hillsides during your walk.
Famous Blue Grotto
The famous Blue Grotto is one of Capri’s most iconic natural wonders, a stunning sea cave stretching 60 meters in length and 25 meters in width. To enter, visitors board small wooden rowboats, each accommodating up to four passengers.
The entrance is only two meters wide and about a meter high, so you lie back along the bottom of the boat as the skipper guides you through the narrow opening using a metal chain fixed to the rock.
Access is by boat only, and it is best to arrive early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid long lines. Be aware that entry to the Blue Grotto requires an additional fee.
Monte Solaro
For the best panoramic views of Capri, take the chairlift from Anacapri to Monte Solaro, the island’s highest point at 589 meters above sea level.
The twelve-minute ride offers an enjoyable glimpse of the island’s natural beauty, but be sure to bring a hat and plenty of water – sitting under the sun for that stretch can take a toll, as I learned firsthand!
At the summit, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views stretching across the island and the Bay of Naples. If you prefer a more active approach, you can also hike to the top, but expect a one- to one-and-a-half-hour trek.
Villa San Michele
Located in Anacapri, Villa San Michele is a must-visit for its rich history and stunning views over the Bay of Naples.
Built by Swedish physician Axel Munthe, the villa showcases an impressive collection of artifacts he discovered on Capri and Anacapri, as well as treasures donated by friends.
Visitors can explore the unique layout of the villa, which features a scenic loggia and a circular viewpoint.
They can also admire ancient relics, including Roman busts, marble columns, and a captivating granite Sphinx that overlooks the island from the villa's tranquil garden.
Center of Anacapri
Along Via Giuseppe Orlandi is a vibrant pedestrian street that invites exploration. Stop by the Church of San Michele to marvel at the beautiful majolica floor. Later, visit the Museo Casa Rossa di Anacapri and appreciate the artistic exhibits.
As you stroll uphill, visit the artisan shops that offer unique souvenirs to take home. At the end of this road, you will meet Piazza Vittoria, where you can indulge in a delicious chicken sandwich from Lollo's Bar!
Punta Carena Lighthouse
Punta Carena Lighthouse, located on the southwestern tip of the island, is another great spot to visit. The lighthouse and surrounding area offer stunning views and a chance to relax by the sea.
The lighthouse remains a peaceful spot, away from the main flow of daytrippers, with dusk offering the best time to take in its beauty as the sun sets over the water and local fishermen set out for night fishing.
In the summer, the two nearby beach cafés often feature live music in the evenings, adding to the relaxed atmosphere.
Boat Trip around the Island
One of the most enjoyable ways to see Capri is by taking a boat tour of the island. These tours often start from Marina Grande and range from short excursions to full-day adventures.
A boat tour of Capri will take you to the island's most famous spots, including the Blue Grotto, the Faraglioni Rocks, and various hidden caves, coves, and other grottos.
You can choose from a selection of tours, including a small group tour, big group tours, and private boat tours, allowing you to choose the best option for you and your party.
Moreover, when deciding which tour to pick, check to see if they offer stops for swimming and snorkeling in the clear waters of the Sea of Capri.
Travel Tip - Best Time to Visit
The ideal time to visit Capri is during the summer months, from early April to late October, when the weather is perfect for enjoying the inviting waters and all attractions on the island are open.
However, this is also peak tourist season, so it can get crowded, which may make it one of the least desirable times to visit.
To avoid crowds, consider going in the early morning or late afternoon. Be aware that visiting or staying in Capri during this time can be pricey, and non-resident vehicles are not allowed on the island.
Happy Exploring!
Capri’s captivating scenery, historic charm, and inviting Mediterranean vibe create an ideal getaway with something for everyone. From breathtaking vistas to relaxing beach spots, the island offers a perfect blend of exploration and leisure for an unforgettable Italian experience.
